Enter the Gungeon Review Information

Why Did I Review This Game?

I have played the game for years, and I enjoy playing it a lot. I feel that is a good reason to write a review.

How Long Have I Been Playing Enter the Gungeon?

I have played the game on and off since 2016.

How Did I Review the Game?

I recently played the game to get pictures to republish some guides I wrote in the past about the game. I figured I should stop to get this review published here as well.

Gameplay Review

How Does This Game Work?

Enter the Gungeon is a rogue-lite game. The goal is to beat all the bosses in one run. As you play the game, you unlock things and other characters to see in runs.

Enter the Gungeon plays like a twin-stick shooter game. You move around and shoot. You can dodge at any time. While dodging, you are temporarily invincible.

Dodging Is Very Fun

Dodging in the game is very fun, and it is part of the reason I enjoy the game so much.

With a well-timed dodge, you can avoid every attack in the game. I like game mechanics like this that reward player skill.

The Items and Guns Are Very Fun

There is a huge variety of guns and items to find and use. There are some traditional guns, like shotguns and the AK-47. But lots of the items are references to other media. I did not recognize some of the references. But the game is subtle about them. I suppose the developers did this to avoid any legal issues.

The game has some silly items as well. The items are fun to use. But not all of them are as good. I suppose that even weak items help, though.

The Game Has Changed a lot Since the Release

The game initially had balance issues. Some guns were very weak. Also, you did not find ammo enough to use them often.

Thankfully, now the game is much better. Now, with synergies, even weak guns can have time to shine. Also, you find ammo much more often. You no longer have to be afraid to use guns because of low ammo.

The Game Is Hard but Fair

The game feels very fair, but it is also quite hard at the same time. But with the dodge-rolling mechanic and the items, you can get good enough to win eventually.

Fighting the bosses in the game is very fun. Some of the bosses are puns based on Dungeons and Dragons. The bosses are hard, but you can learn their attack patterns with time.

The game shows how your run went when you lose.

The Characters Are Nice

Enter the Gungeon has multiple characters to play. They all have unique play styles and are fun to play with. There are some extra characters you can unlock while playing the game as well.

Presentation Review

How the Game Looks

The game looks good enough. The game has that indie game look that many similar games do. I mean that it looks decent but not amazing. I feel a game would have to be very ugly for me to be slighted or annoyed by how it looks.

How the Game Sounds

The game has one of my favorite video game soundtracks of all time. I have bought the soundtrack on Bandcamp, and I listen to it often.

The game has good sounds as well.

The guns sound powerful or weak depending on what gun you are using. The game is good at giving this feedback. Good guns sound and feel good to use.

One of my favorite weapons is a guitar. Every time you use it, you play a solo and shoot music notes at enemies. There are multiple parts of this song that plays every time you shoot. This is an example of the level of detail the game has for its sounds.

My Thoughts on the Value of the Game

Is Enter the Gungeon Worth Buying?

Enter the Gungeon costs only $15 (USD). The price is very good. Considering how much content this game has. I bought the game right around when it was first released, and I have enjoyed playing it since.

The developers never released DLC for the game, and every major game update was free. You get everything the game has to offer for one purchase.

My Overall Thoughts on Enter the Gungeon

Enter The Gungeon is one of my favorite rogue-lite games. I like how the game feels hard but fair at the same time. I wish more games can be good as this. My feelings on the future game Exit the Gungeon are a bit mixed. But I can always come back the Enter the Gungeon and have some fun.

Do I Recommend People Play Enter the Gungeon?

Yes.

Unless you hate games like this or don’t like harder games. Enter the Gungeon is a fun game that you can enjoy for many hours.

Will I Keep Playing Enter the Gungeon?

I don’t play Enter the Gungeon as much I have used to. But I will still play the game occasionally.
